(1914) {The Star Boarder} {In Love with His Landlady} Charlie Chaplin's 10th movie. Charlie is a paying guest at a boarding house and because he shows the landlady attention and compliments, he gets better treatment than the other boarders. The Landlord is suspicious that something is going on between the pair, and their young son [Gordon Griffith] has a camera to capture moments that would be embarrassing to those who get their pictures taken. Runtime is 7m45s of a 16 minuter. Video 3 / Sound 9. It is worth noting that Gordon Griffith is officially the first screen Tarzan because he appears as Tarzan as a boy in 'Tarzan of the Apes' (1918). *** |

(1914) Charlie Chaplin's ninth movie. Chaplin as Lord Helpus is rejected by the girl he loves because of a misunderstanding with the maid. Lord Helpus decides to end it all by drinking some poison, which the Butler has now switched for water. To the Butler's great amusement, Lord Helpus goes through some personal torment as he succomes to the 'poison'. This is 08m57s of what was originally a 16 minuter, which goes a long way to explain why events unfold in an abrupt manner. This is probably true of many of these very early movies, where the missing footage make them appear more poorly directed than if we were privileged to view a full version. Video 3 / Sound 9. ** |
