This film "To the Shores of Iwo Jima" is not a Holkywood movie. In fact, it is actual combat film foitage made by the U. S. Marine Signal Corps during the actual battle. The U. S. Navy spent several months bombarding the island with heavy artillary from ships prior to the U. S. Marines hitting the beach on February 19, 1945. This operation was the bloodiest battle ever to date fought by the U. S. Marine Corps. A total of 70,000 U. S. troops fought 18,000 Japanese soldiers, who were dug in tight to the volcanic rock in caves with orders to hold out yo the last man, day and night, until final capitulation on March 26, 1945. This battle was necessary in order to secure an airbase to launch an attack on Okinawa, the last battle prior to the planned attack on the mainland of Japan. The island was needed to build an airstrip as a base of operations for B-29 heavy
bombers to take-off, fly over parts of Japan, drop their
bombs, and return to their landing zone within the 3,300
mile range of a B-29. |
